5.4 billion euros trade deficit from the EU

In January, the European Union (EU) recorded a 5.4 billion euros trade deficit. The statistical office of the European Union, Eurostat, published the international trade data for the EU and the Euro Area for January. According to the data, the EU’s exports increased by 4.4 percent in January compared to the same month last year, reaching 208.7 billion euros, while imports rose by 10.9 percent to 214.1 billion euros. Therefore, the EU reported a trade deficit of 5.4 billion euros for that specific month. In the Euro Area, exports in January increased by 3 percent to 232.5 billion euros compared to the same month in 2024, while imports rose by 7.6 percent to 231.5 billion euros. Consequently, the trade surplus for the Euro Area was recorded at 1 billion euros in January. During this period, the countries that imported the most from the EU were the United States with 46.7 billion euros, the United Kingdom with 28.1 billion euros, Switzerland with 17.2 billion euros, China with 14.8 billion euros, and Turkey with 8.8 billion euros. The countries that exported the most to the EU were China with 44.8 billion euros, the United States with 30.5 billion euros, the United Kingdom with 12.9 billion euros, Switzerland with 11.6 billion euros, and Turkey with 9.2 billion euros.
