$550,000 Signature Fraud: Becoming Rich Exploiting Celebrities

In the United States, a fraudster who made hundreds of thousands of dollars by selling fake autographed memorabilia of celebrities was caught. Anthony J. Tremayne, aged 58, admitted to the charges on Tuesday and is facing trial with a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Using the names of the Kardashian family, Donald Trump, famous athletes, and musicians to sell “autographed” memorabilia as if they were genuine, the swindler behind the products, 58-year-old Anthony J. Tremayne, accepted fraud charges on Tuesday. American Tremayne is now facing up to 20 years in prison. According to the Central District of California Prosecutor’s Office, Tremayne sent fake autographed items to customers nationwide between 2010 and 2019, even providing an “authenticity certificate” with the products. After moving to Rosarito, Mexico in 2019, Tremayne was found to have sold fake sports and celebrity memorabilia worth a total of $550,000. In November 2019, he sold a picture falsely depicting three characters from the TV show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” with fake signatures as if they were genuine. However, the buyer turned out to be an undercover FBI agent, and Tremayne made this sale for $200.

According to the investigation file, FBI agents raided Tremayne’s house on December 23, 2014, seizing some counterfeit materials. At that time, Tremayne reportedly said, “Why me? This is not something important. FBI has better things to do,” during the raid. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office statement, Tremayne admitted in his plea agreement that he sold fake products valued between $250,000 and $550,000 to clients. United States District Judge James Selna is expected to announce Tremayne’s sentence on August 11. Tremayne is anticipated to receive a federal prison sentence of up to 20 years.
