Cold Weather Causes Fish Prices to Increase

The rainy and cold weather in Trabzon is having a negative impact on life. Fishermen being unable to go out to sea has led to an increase in fish prices at the market stalls. Fishermen also expressed that there is a low demand for fish among the public.

In the Moloz area of Ortahisar district, the price per kilogram is 150 for horse mackerel and whiting, 250 for salmon, 350 for bluefish, 300 to 350 for sea bass, 150 for anchovies, and 175 for each horse mackerel for consumers. Fisherman Onur Örseloğlu stated that prices have risen due to the cold and rainy weather. Örseloğlu mentioned that a slight increase in temperatures could positively affect fishing and added, “Fish is a food item that our people will be able to consume at affordable prices again. We are now waiting for the weather to improve. Let the public benefit and let us benefit as well.” Örseloğlu emphasized that there is generally good interest in fish in Trabzon and said, “People in Trabzon still don’t give up on fish. Those who intend to buy 2 kilograms end up buying 1.5 kilograms instead. There is no shortage of fish varieties. Prices fluctuate a bit, but that is beyond our control.”

LOW DEMAND FOR FISH
Fisherman Emin Avcı mentioned that there is currently low demand for fish, stating, “Due to adverse weather conditions, fish are coming in very limited quantities. We are putting farmed fish such as salmon and sea bass on our counters. Prices become expensive accordingly because fish are arriving in very limited amounts.” Resident Yaşar Keleş expressed his preference for salmon, saying, “Fish are expensive, but there’s nothing we can do about it. We buy occasionally. Looking at the prices, this place used to be crowded on Sundays in the past.”
