American billionaire and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, argued that Radio Free Europe and Voice of America should be shut down, claiming that citizens waste $1 billion annually. Musk quoted a post by Richard Grenell, special envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, on this issue, expressing why these organizations need to be closed. Musk tweeted from his social media platform X account, “Yes, let’s shut them down. Except for the suffocating bureaucracy, Europe is now free. Do you realize? No one listens to these channels anymore.” Saying that these organizations waste $1 billion in annual tax revenue, Musk alleged, “There are only radical leftist crazy people talking to themselves here.” Grenell, in his post, stated that Radio Free Europe and Voice of America are state-supported broadcasting institutions, claiming, “These organizations are full of extreme leftist activists. I’ve worked with these people for years. These are the remnants of the past. We do not need government-supported media institutions.”
