Increased Trust in Turkey: More Countries See Ankara as an “Ally”

The Munich Security Report 2025, prepared by the Munich Security Conference based in Germany through surveys conducted in many countries, emphasized the positive change in perceptions towards Turkey. According to the report, in all countries surveyed except for France, the percentage of those who view Turkey as an “ally” exceeded those who see it as a “threat.”
The Munich Security Report 2025, released under the title “Multipolarity” ahead of the 61st Munich Security Conference where defense and foreign policy issues will be discussed. Surveys were conducted in Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Brazil, Japan, Canada, India, China, and South Africa to cover the global perspective for the report.
In the surveys, which were mostly Western-oriented, the countries where perceptions changed most positively, aside from Turkey, were South Korea, Poland, and the United Kingdom. According to the report, in all countries surveyed, except for France, the percentage of those who consider Turkey as an “ally” exceeded those who see it as a “threat.” The difference between those who view Turkey as an ally and those who see it as a threat was 28 points in the UK and Japan, 26 points in China, 25 points in India, 19 points in South Africa, and 14 points in both the US and Canada, 10 points in Brazil, 5 points in Italy, and 2 points in Germany.
Additionally, only in France, with a difference of 2 points, the percentage of those who see Turkey as a threat was higher than those who see it as an ally. HIGHEST INCREASES IN GERMANY AND THE UK
Compared to the previous survey, the countries where the percentage of those who see Turkey as an ally increased the most were Germany and the UK with 11 points each, followed by Italy with 9 points, France with 8 points, and Canada with 6 points. After South Korea, Turkey ranked as the second country where perceptions turned most positively in the past year, with the UK, Brazil, and Poland being the other countries receiving positive ratings. THEY SEE THE US AND ISRAEL AS THREATS
Furthermore, among the countries hit the hardest in terms of their alliance image compared to the previous survey were the US and Israel. The percentage of those who see the US as an ally decreased by 15 points in France, 11 points in Japan, 9 points in Germany, and 6 points in the UK.
There was a notable rapid increase in the percentage of those who see Israel, being tried in international courts for committing genocide crimes in Gaza, as a threat compared to the previous survey.
The percentage of those who see Israel as a threat decreased by 12 points in Italy, 11 points in France, 9 points in the UK, and 8 points each in Germany and Japan, 4 points each in the US, China, and Brazil. Israel was also the only country perceived increasingly as a threat in all surveyed countries.
