Turkey Initiates Renovation Works at Damascus Airport

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced that a technical team of 25 people sent from Turkey has begun work in Syria to renovate the Damascus Airport. Minister Uraloğlu stated in a written statement that in order to restore the Damascus Airport, which became unusable due to damage during the 13-year civil war in Syria, they have established a technical team consisting of personnel from the State Airports Authority. The assigned team of 25 individuals safely entered the country on February 7th through the Cilvegözü Border Gate in the Reyhanlı district of Hatay, as Uraloğlu reported that 113 vehicles, devices, and systems were dispatched with six trucks to ensure the safe operations of flights at the Damascus Airport and in Syrian airspace. The team responsible for device installations will also complete the training process for the Damascus Airport personnel. Uraloğlu mentioned that a technical team composed of units such as navigation, air navigation electronics, terminal electronics, security, and airport rescue firefighting (ARFF) delivered materials to the airport, noted deficiencies, and is conducting technical cooperation for both interior and exterior airport operations. “Two new receiver and transmitter radio systems were installed.” The navigation unit continues its work in Damascus, meticulously analyzing all flight operations in the airspace, with Uraloğlu stating, “Visual flight occurs at the airport. Our teams are closely monitoring landing, takeoff, and transit processes. We are evaluating how to elevate the landing and takeoff operations of the Damascus Airport and Syrian airspace with air navigation auxiliary devices.” Minister Uraloğlu also detailed that repairs were made to some navigation auxiliary devices damaged or faulty for many years, and two new receiver and transmitter radio systems were installed in the air traffic control tower. Emphasizing the increased terminal security measures for the airport to provide services more securely, Uraloğlu continued his statement: “10 x-ray devices, 4 explosive trace detectors, 10 door-type metal detectors, and 8 handheld metal detectors from Turkey have reached the airport. Our teams, working in coordination with Syrian authorities, have completed the installation of a large portion of these devices. Inspections to enhance the security level of the Damascus Airport are ongoing, and necessary reports are being prepared to address any deficiencies.” Uraloğlu mentioned that so far, 6 x-ray machines and 5 door-type metal detectors have been installed, while work continues on the assembly of other security equipment and the repair of existing devices at the airport.
