Pre-Ramadan Call to Consumers: Compare Receipts

The countdown to the month of Ramadan has begun. Every year, prices can increase especially for products like dates, pita bread, and soft drinks before Ramadan. Consumer associations are urging consumers to compare receipts to combat exorbitant price increases.
There is less than two weeks left until the start of Ramadan. Every year, there is an increase in demand for certain products before Ramadan. Prices can be raised, particularly for products like pita bread, dates, and soft drinks. Consumer associations have warned citizens about exorbitant price hikes. Sıtkı Yılmaz, the President of Bursa Consumer Association, stated, “Everyone should know that the best regulator of the market is the consumer. We know that you receive a receipt or invoice when you shop. Compare the February receipts that you received with the price tags with the prices you paid at the end of February.”
WHERE CAN EXCESSIVE PRICES BE REPORTED? Consumers can report excessive price increases in a product. These products can be reported to the Unfair Price Evaluation Board through e-government. In addition, requests can be made for inspections to be carried out by provincial trade directorates and relevant chambers.
Yılmaz said, “Our consumers should act very consciously and continue their control responsibilities. Everyone should be sure that we will make every effort for the consumer.” In its first meeting in 2025, the Unfair Price Evaluation Board imposed a total of 126 million 700 thousand lira in fines.
