Rental House Scandal Unveiled After Absence Noted and Google Reviews Checked

The scandal that began with allegations of Imperial Property Group, a rental agency in South London, renting houses to NHS (National Health System) employees ended with numerous houses being transformed into cannabis farms. Property owners faced significant financial damages, and the failure to bring the culprits to justice sparked a major debate. In the summer of 2020, 79-year-old retired garage owner Hajaj Hajaj, contacted Imperial Property Group on the recommendation of his daughter Kinda Jackson. The agency was supposed to manage the property, deal with tenants, and take care of repairs. However, the house Hajaj rented to support his wife’s care with his retirement pension was actually turned into a drug factory. After contracting Covid-19 and being hospitalized, Hajaj contacted Imperial to check on his property. The manager assured him that the property was regularly inspected and in good condition. However, when rent payments stopped in November 2022 and Hajaj had to visit the property, he noticed the situation: the house was overflowing with cannabis plants. Similarly, Michelle Chen, who had a similar experience, panicked upon learning that her own house had been turned into a cannabis farm after checking Google reviews and seeing a comment by Hajaj’s daughter stating “Our house was turned into a cannabis farm.” In Hajaj’s house, 160 cannabis plants were found, and tenant Niazi Hysa was jailed on drug charges. However, it was noted that the police force lacked adequate resources to track organized gangs. While cannabis farms became places where illegal immigrants were forced to work, it was emphasized that more measures needed to be taken to apprehend the criminals. According to The Guardian, although the Metropolitan Police kept records of 8,000 cannabis-related crimes from 2015 to 2024, charges were only brought against a third of them. Experts noted that this figure represented only a small part of the illegal cannabis cultivation in the country. During the pandemic, a 70% increase in cannabis production was observed, mostly carried out by amateur growers. The density of cannabis farms in London stood out, with reports of these farms being found in bars, former school buildings, and even closed nuclear bunkers. Despite reporting to the police after realizing the fraud of setting up cannabis farms in properties, most of the homeowners return without finding a solution. Cannabis farming and rental fraud have become a serious issue in the UK housing market, with victims seeking justice. They emphasize the need for necessary measures to be taken to resolve these issues.
