Artificial Intelligence Competition Heating Up in the Gulf: Major Move from Qatar

The government of Qatar has signed a five-year agreement with artificial intelligence data company Scale AI. The company will develop more than 50 artificial intelligence applications for Qatar. The Qatari government will harness the power of artificial intelligence to digitize and enhance public services. In this context, the Gulf country has entered into a five-year partnership with the US-based artificial intelligence company Scale AI. Scale AI’s Global Development President Trevor Thompson stated, “This agreement may serve as an example for other governments around the world. It will also enable us to devote ourselves to showing the impact of our work more quickly.” Based in California, the company will develop over 50 artificial intelligence applications for Qatar. These applications will provide Qatar with tools such as predictive analytics, automation, and advanced data analysis. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of Qatar highlighted that this collaboration will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of public services.
COMPETITION IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INTENSIFYING IN THE GULF
Qatar is competing with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates for artificial intelligence leadership in its region. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are making serious investments in smart city applications. Bahrain, one of the leading countries in the region, is currently focused on data analytics solutions. No official statement has been made by Qatar or Scale AI regarding the financial details of the agreement.
INCREASE IN COMPANIES PROVIDING SERVICES TO GOVERNMENTS
Scale AI, a company providing artificial intelligence, technology, and cybersecurity services to governments, has joined the ranks of companies like Palantir, Booz Allen Hamilton, IBM, C3.ai, and Accenture. Experts claim that in the coming years, many governments seeking to leverage the power of artificial intelligence may enter into similar agreements. Founded in California in 2016, Scale AI gained prominence by providing labeled data to train artificial intelligence applications. Properly labeled data is a crucial element that enables artificial intelligence models to perform better. Technology giants such as OpenAI, Google, and Meta also procure this service from the Scale AI company. Scale AI is estimated to have a market value of $14 billion. By 2025, the company had raised $1.6 billion in funding.
