Monkey puppy seized in Colombia: Its calls can be heard from 5 kilometers away

In Colombia, a howler monkey puppy was seized. A 4-month-old howler monkey, one of the loudest land animals in nature, was rescued in an operation against illegal animal trade in the country. Officials have placed the howler monkey puppy under protection, delivering it to the Bioparque Los Ocarros Zoo in the Villavicencio town of the Meta administrative region of the country. Officials highlighted that when howler monkeys are separated from their natural habitats, their chances of survival significantly decrease and there is a high risk of rejection by their own species when reintroduced to the wild.

In Colombia, the police are conducting operations against illegal animal trade to prevent smuggling. However, illegal animal trade remains a serious issue in the country due to organized crime groups and inadequate controls. According to local media, monkeys, parrots, jaguars, turtles, frogs, and rare reptile species are the main targets of smugglers in the country. Howler monkeys get their name from the loud howling sounds they produce. This primate species living in tropical forests in South and Central America is known as one of the loudest land animals in nature, with their calls being audible from 5 kilometers away. The powerful sounds produced by howler monkeys help them communicate in the forest and create an advantage against enemies by echoing through the jungle.
