Call from King Mohammed VI of Morocco to “Refrain from Sacrificing Animals”

King Mohammed VI of Morocco has urged the country not to sacrifice animals this year due to drought and economic reasons caused by climate change, announcing that he will perform this ritual on behalf of the Moroccan people. In a message to the public broadcast on state television, King Mohammed VI requested that no sacrifices be made this year, citing climatic and economic difficulties in the country leading to a significant decline in the animal population. The message emphasized that sacrificing animals is a “strong tradition that should be observed if possible,” but under current circumstances, fulfilling this religious duty could pose a significant burden, especially for low-income segments of the population. It was stated that the King would perform this ritual on behalf of the Moroccan people. The message also reassured that Eid al-Adha will be celebrated with its usual spiritual significance and requirements. Foregoing the ritual of animal sacrifice has occurred three times before in Morocco, in 1963, 1981, and 1996 when the public was asked to refrain from sacrificing animals.
