Cyclone hits France’s Reunion Island: Vehicles dragged by floodwaters

The Garance Cyclone, which affected the French overseas territory of Reunion Island, caused vehicles to be dragged in the flood. As roofs of buildings were blown off, 180 thousand households were left without power.

Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, attached to France, was struck by the Garance Cyclone. With a speed reaching 155 kilometers per hour, the cyclone turned the area into a battlefield.

As roofs of buildings were blown off, streets and roads were submerged in water. Numerous vehicles were dragged by the floodwaters. An announcement from the prefecture stated that 180 thousand households, equivalent to 42% of subscribers, experienced power outages, and approximately 10% could not access drinking water. It was reported that the storm warning was lowered from the highest level of purple to red.

Governor Patrice Latron mentioned that no casualties had been reported so far. The Bejisa Cyclone that hit Reunion Island in January resulted in the loss of 4 lives and an estimated damage of 100 million euros.
