Papa had a calm night but his condition remains “complex”

The spiritual leader of Catholics and the Head of State of the Vatican, Pope Francis, reportedly had a calm night following yesterday’s bronchospasm crisis and worsening of his breathing, experiencing no further crisis but the complexity of his condition continues. After being hospitalized in the Gemelli Hospital in Rome for 16 days due to severe bronchitis and diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, the 88-year-old Pope’s health condition has been shared with the press by Vatican sources. It was noted that the Pope had a calm night and rested after yesterday’s bronchospasm crisis, did not experience another crisis, and had no fever. Doctors are said to be maintaining a cautious approach regarding the progress of the illness. Italian media also wrote that the Pope’s medical condition continues to be complex. The Vatican, in its statement yesterday evening, mentioned that a bronchoaspiration was performed on the Pope due to the bronchospasm crisis, mechanical ventilation was initiated to ensure the gas exchange (adequate intake of oxygen and proper elimination of produced carbon dioxide), and positive response to the treatment was noted. – Since February 14, Pope has been receiving treatment in the hospital. Pope Francis, unable to speak at two public events on February 9 and 12 due to bronchitis and difficulty in breathing, had asked his aides to read the speech texts. On February 14, when Pope was admitted to Gemelli Hospital, it was reported that he had a polymicrobial infection in his respiratory tract. The Vatican announced on February 18 that Pope had developed bilateral pneumonia and his clinical condition presented a complex picture. Although Pope Francis’ doctors stated on February 21 that he had not completely passed the danger, they mentioned that there was no vital risk. On February 22, Pope, who suffered an asthma crisis, was described as in critical condition. The Vatican reported on February 24 that there was a slight improvement in Pope Francis’ health despite his condition remaining critical, and on February 25, they defined the situation as critical but stable. The Vatican reported on February 26 and 27 that there was improvement in Pope’s condition. Yesterday, the Vatican had also announced that Pope had a bronchospasm crisis which caused a sudden worsening of his respiratory condition. – Health problems have increased in recent years. Pope Francis, who has been the spiritual leader of Catholics since 2013, was hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital for the first time in 2021 for a colon surgery. Using a wheelchair in recent years due to knee pain, Pope had been treated twice at Gemelli Hospital in 2023, once for shortness of breath and the other for the placement of a prosthesis in his abdominal wall.
