Australia plunged into darkness: Cyclone hits, power outages

Severe rain and winds brought by Cyclone Alfred are battering the shores of Australia, leaving over 300,000 homes without electricity in the Queensland state. Repair teams are struggling to work due to weather conditions, so tens of thousands of homes could be without power for a week. This is noted as the biggest power loss due to a natural disaster in the region.
As severe rain continues to hit Australia, emergency teams have urged residents to stay away from the flooding caused by Cyclone Alfred. According to AFP, over 300,000 homes are without power in Queensland, with officials estimating that at least 750,000 people have been affected by the outages.
13 INJURED IN DEFENCE FORCES Officials suggest that power restoration in some areas could take up to a week, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that 13 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel have been “seriously injured” in the wild weather conditions. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli stated, “This is the biggest power loss due to a natural disaster in Queensland history.” Severe rain and strong winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour hit the Brisbane area on Saturday night.
EXPECTED TO CONTINUE UNTIL MONDAY Weather forecasters anticipate rain up to 700 millimeters and destructive winds to continue until Monday. Prime Minister Albanese mentioned that the situation remains “very severe” in Queensland and that intense rain and winds are expected in the coming days. Over a thousand people in Gold Coast and approximately 50,000 in Brisbane remain without power.
