Tomato price doubles from field to market in Hatay

In Hatay, tomatoes grown and harvested in greenhouses by farmers are finding buyers at 28 TL. The producer is reacting to the price of tomatoes doubling to 60 TL per kilogram in the market. Hatay, with some of Turkey’s most fertile soils, continues to see farmers growing their crops in greenhouses this March. The recent frost has negatively affected many farmers, but those whose crops were unharmed are harvesting their products. Tomatoes harvested in the region are being sent to various parts of Turkey. Following the frost disaster, the price of tomatoes per kilogram in the field is 28 TL. Ruhi Yapıcı, who is harvesting tomatoes in a greenhouse in the Tekebaşı neighborhood of Samandağ district, drew attention to the difference between field and market prices of tomatoes, stating that consumers and producers are adversely affected by this situation. Noting that the difference between market and field prices is twofold, farmer Ruhi Yapıcı said, “The current price of tomatoes in the field is between 28 TL and 30 TL. I am satisfied with the price if I can sell my product in the field. When I look at the shelves, I see that tomato prices in Istanbul have reached 100 TL. Without going too far, when we look at the shelves in Hatay, the price of tomatoes per kilogram is around 60 TL. In these conditions, it is the farmers who suffer losses, we have put effort into this. We experienced a frost disaster about 20 days ago and we struggled with it. The consumer is further disadvantaged in this situation. The ones who are disadvantaged here are the producers and consumers, not the merchants. Tomatoes are 28 TL in the field and reach 60 TL in the market, and this situation affects the consumer. The consumer ends up getting half the amount of tomatoes they intended to buy.
