Turmoil in Congress in Argentina: Journalist protest leaves a mark

Allegations linking Argentine President Javier Milei to a crypto scandal stirred up the Congress. The attempt to initiate impeachment proceedings against Milei led to disputes turning into fights between opposition and ruling party members. Milei, whose promoted crypto currency dropped by 94%, had the impeachment process postponed by the ruling party’s efforts.

Outside the Congress building, journalists staged a protest. Media professionals demonstrated in front of the Congress building in response to a photojournalist being severely injured while covering a protest by retirees. Protesters hung their cameras on the iron bars of the Congress building as a sign of protest. Pablo Grillo, the photojournalist, was seriously injured and hospitalized after being hit by a tear gas canister during the intervention of security forces while covering the retirees’ demonstration. Press freedom organizations condemned the incident, urging the perpetrators to be held accountable and calling for better protection of journalists.
