Railway Workers in Belgium to Go on Strike

Railway workers in Belgium are set to begin a week-long strike from March 23 to March 30 to protest against financial cutbacks and changes in working conditions. The national railway company in Belgium, SNBC, announced that Independent Union members in all units will go on strike from March 23 to March 30, leading to a reduction in train services. The impact of the strike is expected to be more significant during the weekdays, with alternative train services being provided daily compared to the existing personnel. According to the statement, the train schedules will be available to track on the SNBC website and app 24 hours prior to the service. Passengers are advised to plan accordingly and check the schedules. The statement indicated that the strike is not expected to affect international train services at this stage and travelers planning to journey on the mentioned dates are encouraged to closely monitor any updates. The Belgian government is planning to cut 250 million euros from the railway sector by 2029. The regulations aim to change the status of employees, increase the retirement age of train drivers, gradually convert employees into contractual staff, and make changes in working conditions. The Union opposes the government’s planned railway reform, arguing that it will negatively impact service quality and personnel working conditions.
