Changes in Driver’s Licenses in Europe

By the end of 2030, the European Union will transition to a standardized digital driver’s license. The European Council announced that an agreement has been reached between member states and the European Parliament on new rules regarding driver’s licenses. The updated directive will result in changes to the minimum requirements for driver eligibility across EU countries and will harmonize rules for probationary periods for novice drivers. The statement emphasized that as a result of these changes, rules and regulations concerning driver’s licenses will be more rational, comprehensive, and in line with the digital society. It was also mentioned that by the end of 2030, there will be a uniform mobile driver’s license for all EU citizens, which will be integrated into the future European digital identity wallet. This digital license will be recognized in all EU member states. Additionally, individuals will have the option to obtain a physical copy of their driver’s license, which will have a validity period of 10 years if used as an identification card. The validity period for driving purposes, specifically for cars and motorcycles, will be 15 years.
