Scientists have announced that Saturn will look very different from its usual appearance this weekend. It has been reported that Saturn’s rings will be nearly invisible to the naked eye or low-power telescopes. Experts noted that this is an optical illusion caused by the positions of the planets. With Saturn having an inclination of 26.73 degrees in its orbit, and Earth at 23.5 degrees, scientists explained that when the two planets align during their orbits around the Sun, Saturn’s rings will almost completely face Earth in a nearly horizontal position, making them nearly invisible. Dr. Shannon Schmoll, Director of the Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University, stated, “As Saturn and Earth orbit the Sun, we find ourselves in a position where we can see Saturn’s rings almost edge-on. The rings are so thin that it becomes nearly impossible to see them from this angle.” This rare celestial event is expected to be most prominent in the last week of March, with the rings appearing to have almost completely disappeared by April.
