Price of 8,000 TL per kilogram decreased to 400 TL

In the district of Silifke in Mersin, while the price per kilogram of plums being harvested in greenhouses dropped to 400 TL, it was revealed that they were exported to countries such as Dubai, Qatar, Canada, England, and Germany, in addition to the domestic market. Plum harvest that started under cover in Mersin, an important agricultural production center in Turkey, continues. Particularly in the greenhouses in Mut and Silifke districts, the price per kilogram of harvested plums decreased from 8,000 TL to 400 TL. Plums collected by agricultural workers from the branches are separated into packages based on their sizes with the help of machines. The plums, which find buyers between 800 and 400 TL, are delivered to traders in the Keben Mahallesi to be sent to both the domestic market and export. It was noted that plums are particularly demanded by countries abroad such as Dubai, Qatar, Canada, England, and Germany. Agricultural Engineer Mustafa Kucur said, “Our plums are currently selling at around 400-600-800 lira depending on their quality. We are currently sending the harvested product to both export and the domestic market. There are plum orchards on approximately 3,000 acres in the Göksu Valley, but this year’s yield is very low, about a third or a quarter. The yield decreased due to climatic factors, cold weather, and excessive consumption of flowers by birds that would have turned into fruit.” Volkan Sümbül, who produces in a 5-acre greenhouse, said that they started harvesting under cover and are satisfied with the prices. Sümbül, who stated that the harvest will continue for about a month more, said, “We closed our greenhouses in the first week of January. Winter conditions were a bit unfavorable. January was very warm and spring-like. We had very cold weather in February when the flowering period started. We had to constantly heat the inside of the greenhouse by burning a stove. This year, there were also a lot of birds in the region. The birds caused great damage by eating the opening flowers. Today, we completed the first harvest with sales ranging from 400-600-800 lira depending on the size. If the export continues like this, the producers will be happy.” Sümbül said that he aims to harvest 12 tons of produce from the 5 acres under cover and complete the harvest in the middle of April.
