Greenland’s new prime minister’s firm response to Trump: “We belong to no one!”

Greenland’s new Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen expressed a strong reaction to US President Donald Trump’s remarks about wanting to take control of the island. The Prime Minister stated, “We belong to no one. We determine our own future.”

Responding to President Donald Trump’s statements about wanting to include Greenland in the US, Greenland’s new leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen said, “President Trump says the US will take Greenland. Let me be clear: the US cannot do this. We belong to no one. We determine our own future.” TRUMP’S CLAIMS AND REACTIONS
In an interview with NBC, Trump said, “We will take Greenland. Yes, 100%,” suggesting that the US could make such a move without resorting to military power. The US President claimed that despite Greenland’s autonomous status, the region is tied to Denmark’s territories and holds strategic importance for the US. Trump had previously stated that “real discussions” had taken place regarding including Greenland in the US.
NIELSEN: “WE MUST UNITE UNDER PRESSURE”
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, 33, was sworn in as Greenland’s youngest prime minister on Friday. In his first press conference after taking office, Nielsen called for political unity by saying, “We must stand together in a time when we are under pressure.” He made these remarks during a press conference held in his hometown, Nuuk.
CRITICISM FROM THE US TO GREENLAND
A delegation led by US Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland. Vance criticized Denmark by saying, “Our message to Denmark is simple: you have not done a good job for the people of Greenland. You have not invested enough in the security architecture of Greenland, this amazing and beautiful land.” In response to the US’s sharp criticism, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated, “We are open to criticism, but let me be completely honest, we do not like the way the criticisms are delivered. You should not speak to your close allies like this, and I still see Denmark and the US as close allies.”
As tensions between the US and Greenland escalate due to Trump’s statements, debates about Greenland’s independence and future are intensifying.
