Turkey-Azerbaijan Energy Cooperation | Minister Bayraktar: Infrastructure Ready to Double Gas Exported to Europe

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the infrastructure aimed at doubling the amount of gas exported to Europe by Azerbaijan by 2027 is ready. Minister Bayraktar made these remarks during his participation in a program on the official Azerbaijan State Television, AZTV. Emphasizing that the energy cooperation between Turkey and Azerbaijan sets an example to the world, Bayraktar stated, “The projects we have developed here are of great importance, especially for Europe’s natural gas supply security. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline plays a crucial role in ensuring a more balanced oil supply worldwide, with 700,000 barrels of oil flowing through this pipeline daily to the global market.”

Bayraktar highlighted that the infrastructure of the pipelines, TANAP and TAP, which carry natural gas from the Caspian Sea and Turkey to Europe, has been built with a capacity of 32 billion cubic meters. He underscored that the infrastructure aimed at doubling the amount of gas exported to Europe by Azerbaijan by 2027 is ready. Stressing the need to encourage investments in gas production in the Caspian Sea, Bayraktar continued, “We are making every effort in this regard. Turkey is a significant natural gas market. Our domestic market has the capacity to accommodate additional capacities that may come from Azerbaijan in the next 15 years. Turkey is a country with a growing industry, economy, and population. We have confidence in our ability to commit to long-term purchases. We have repeatedly conveyed this message to our counterparts in Azerbaijan, particularly to SOCAR. When the European Union finalizes its decision, TANAP will be able to operate at full capacity.”

Bayraktar highlighted the addition of the Iğdır-Nakhchivan Natural Gas Pipeline between the two countries, stating, “Through this pipeline, we have established infrastructure that will supply natural gas to Nakhchivan and our brothers and sisters living there for 30 years.” Touching on the “green energy corridor” project discussed at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), Bayraktar concluded, “In the project we are developing among Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, efforts are being made to transport electricity produced in Azerbaijan to Turkey and then to Europe. In a few days, at the annual customary meetings of the Southern Gas Corridor, as four countries, we will sign an agreement. Electric transmission lines will be added to the 4 pipeline routes I mentioned. We will implement a new project that will contribute to the energy security of Turkey and Europe, not only in the field of natural gas and oil but also in the field of electricity, with Azerbaijan.”
