Presidential Election Date Set in South Korea

The presidential election in South Korea is set to take place on June 3rd. According to a report based on government sources by South Korean agency Yonhap, the date is expected to be approved in a cabinet meeting led by Acting President Prime Minister Han Duck-soo tomorrow. Following the Constitutional Court’s impeachment ruling, the country must hold an early election for the presidency within 60 days. If the date is approved, candidates must apply by May 11th according to the election schedule, with campaigns beginning on May 12th. The new president will take office after the election on June 3rd. YOON’S DECLARATION OF MARTIAL LAW AND IMPEACHMENT PROCESS. Former President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on December 3, 2024, citing “anti-state activities by the opposition,” but was forced to retract this decision after a vote by the legislature and approval by the Cabinet. Yoon, who faced impeachment in a vote in the National Assembly on December 14, 2024, was temporarily suspended from office pending the Constitutional Court’s decision. Following the trial, the Constitutional Court accepted the National Assembly’s impeachment request on April 4, leading to Yoon’s removal from office due to the declaration of martial law.
