2-Day Ultimatum from Algeria to 12 French Consulate Employees: “Leave the Country”

The decision by Algeria to expel 12 consulate employees of France will be immediately responded to if they do not reconsider, stated French Foreign Minister Barrot. The French Foreign Ministry reported that Algeria, whose relations have become more tense in recent years with mutual detentions, demanded that 12 French consulate employees leave the country within 48 hours. Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot described Algeria’s demand for the 12 French consulate employees to leave the country within 48 hours as “unfair.” Barrot urged Algeria to reconsider this decision, which came after three Algerians were detained in France following allegations of serious crimes committed on French soil. Barrot emphasized that this decision was taken as a reaction to the detention of three Algerians on the grounds of committing serious crimes in France and expressed that they are currently trying to rebuild dialogue with Algeria, stating, “I demand that the Algerian authorities abandon this expulsion measure that has no connection to the ongoing legal procedures of the detainees.” Barrot warned that if Algeria does not reconsider its decision, an “immediate” response will be made to expel the consulate employees. Prosecutors in France had prepared indictments on Friday for three Algerians, including a consulate employee, in connection with suspicions of involvement in the 2024 kidnapping case of Algerian social media personality, Amir Boukhors.
