Egg prices doubled in 9 months

Eggs are practically the main and cheapest source of protein in almost every household. However, the increasing prices lately have started to affect the affordability of eggs. Industry representatives, on the other hand, believe that the rise in prices is temporary… (Reporter: Sinan Kunter)It doesn’t matter if it’s organic, free-range, or caged, the price increase reflects on all types of eggs. The cheapest egg in the market is being sold for at least eight liras. Although in some stores the price drops to 6.5 liras, it can go up to 14 liras depending on the type.egg sellers say that just ten days ago, an egg was 6 liras, and now it’s 8 liras. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), egg prices have doubled in the last nine months. In the past month alone, the price increase is close to 10%.According to sellers, eggs leave the producers at a higher price, and additional costs are added until they reach the consumers. While some news sources attribute the egg price increase to exports, industry representatives claim that the effects of bird flu seen about five months ago are still lingering. The current egg production is not enough to meet the market demand. It is indicated that there is a possibility for price drops in at least two weeks.
