Gynecologists Warn: Flesh-Eating Infection in Genital Region

A case report published in the UK revealed that the rare but potentially fatal “flesh-eating bacteria” infection can also affect the female external genitalia.

Doctors from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital in the UK reported three different cases of necrotizing fasciitis affecting the external genitalia (vulva). This disease is an extremely aggressive type of infection known as “flesh-eating bacteria” in common parlance. It is particularly seen in individuals with weak immune systems and can rapidly progress to fatal consequences. CAN BE FATAL WITHIN HOURS

According to microbiology professor Bill Sullivan from Indiana University, bacteria can enter the skin and reach the connective tissues surrounding muscles, nerves, and blood vessels, and rapidly “melt” or destroy these tissues. If the infection enters the bloodstream, a systemic immune response called sepsis begins, which can result in organ failure. The first patient mentioned in the case report succumbed to the infection 28 hours after being admitted to intensive care, despite initial treatment for a small skin lesion. SURGERY AND EARLY DIAGNOSIS SAVE LIVES

The second patient underwent three surgeries due to rapid tissue loss caused by an abscess starting in the labia majora, followed by reconstructive surgery and successful recovery. The third patient developed this disease after a uterine surgery wound infection, was treated by removing infected tissue and strong antibiotics, and recovered. GYNECOLOGISTS WARN: DETECT SYMPTOMS EARLY

Experts highlight that while necrotizing fasciitis in the vaginal area is rare, it is extremely dangerous, and a delayed diagnosis significantly increases the risk of death. It is mentioned that it can develop after traumatic skin injuries, sexual intercourse, surgical procedures, or piercing. Sullivan points out that diagnosing the vaginal form of the disease may be more challenging, so gynecologists need to be vigilant: “Time is critical. Early diagnosis saves lives.” INFECTIONS RISING: 20 CASES IN JUST 2 YEARS

According to the report, the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital saw 20 cases of flesh-eating bacteria between 2022 and 2024. This number exceeded the total of 18 cases reported in the previous 10 years. Moreover, many countries in Europe and the US are reporting an increase in group A streptococcal infections leading to necrotizing fasciitis. Experts are calling for greater awareness of this deadly disease.
