How to Detect Hidden Cameras in Hotel Rooms? The Most Practical Method

The discovery of a hidden camera in a bungalow rented for a vacation in Sapanca once again raised concerns about the privacy and security of personal spaces. A security systems expert explained how to uncover these devices by conducting simple tests using a mobile phone camera. In the incident on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, a family from Istanbul who came to Sapanca, Sakarya for a holiday, noticed a hidden camera in the bungalow they had rented. The family, noticing the camera hidden inside a light bulb that directly overlooked the bedroom and jacuzzi area, reported the situation to the law enforcement authorities. Responding to the report, the police seized all electronic devices in the bungalow to start an investigation. While the incident created a stir in the public eye, citizens started looking for answers to questions like “How to detect hidden cameras?” and “In what areas could they be hidden?”. Resul Karaaslan, who has been serving in the field of security cameras for 25 years, stated that camera systems have made significant progress with the advancement of technology. Karaaslan emphasized the importance of citizens using their phones to check for hidden cameras in the places they stay, providing the following information: “The most practical way to find a hidden camera is with a mobile phone. They can detect it using the camera on their phone because the camera in the phone can see ultraviolet rays that are invisible to our eyes. For example, by placing a TV remote control in front of your phone and performing an action, the rays that you cannot see are reflected onto the camera. Similarly, the first thing to do when entering a room is to turn off the lights completely and turn on the phone’s light. This way, if there is a hidden camera in the room, the lens will reflect. As a second option, they can open the camera on their phones in the places they go. When they turn on the camera, the UV rays will be directly visible on the camera. If the room appears unlit, they can also use a flashlight to find it by directing it to the suspected point and looking for reflection.” Karaaslan also drew attention to the places where hidden cameras are commonly placed, stating, “Hidden cameras are usually hidden in electrical outlets, PIR motion detectors, fire alarm systems, clocks, and the inner parts of corners and sills. In fact, the most surprising incident that I have seen, which also surprised me and watched in amazement, is that these hidden cameras can even be placed inside boilers.” Resul Karaaslan pointed out that hidden cameras not only record but also have a live broadcast feature, saying, “These cameras have terrifying capabilities. One of them is that these cameras can record directly, connect directly to the internet, and be watched live by the user.” Karaaslan advised, “In order to avoid experiencing any inconvenience, citizens should not go to places they do not trust. In the places they visit, they can detect if there is a hidden camera using the methods I mentioned. Furthermore, there are devices sold to detect these cameras. But not everyone may be able to carry those devices with them. That’s why I am suggesting these practical methods.”
