A new era of strong product security in online shopping starts tomorrow. Sellers will now share product information in detail. Inappropriate listings will be removed within 24 hours. Foreign sellers will be required to have a local representative. The Regulation on Market Surveillance and Inspection of Products Marketed through Communication Tools at a Distance to Ensure Transparency and Product Safety in Online Shopping will come into effect tomorrow. The regulation prepared by the Ministry of Commerce and published in the Official Gazette on October 30, 2024, will come into effect tomorrow after a 5-month transition period. According to the announcement made, it was stated that the regulation aims to ensure transparency and product safety in online shopping while protecting the rights of consumers, it will bring important innovations for both citizens and product selling companies. Product details will be presented in detail. The regulation obliges sellers to provide security information about their products in a clear and understandable manner. Listings will include manufacturer or importer information, contact address, and details on product safety. Thus, consumers will be able to access more information about the product before making a purchase. This way, citizens will be able to examine the product just like in a physical store while shopping online. Removed from the publication will be the listings if deemed inappropriate within 24 hours. Citizens will be provided a standard-compliant and safer shopping environment. These virtual marketplaces will create contact points where consumers can apply for product safety. Complaints, notifications, and information requests regarding the safety of products can be submitted through these points. Changes will also be made regarding companies selling products from abroad. Companies sending products from abroad will be required to appoint a local representative in Turkey. Companies that fail to meet this requirement will not be able to sell to Turkey. Sanctions will be applied to those who do not comply with the regulations, and access to inappropriate content will be blocked.
