AB-US tariff war: “We are prepared for everything from the US”

The European Union (EU) Commission Spokesperson Olof Gill stated that they are prepared for the possibility of the US responding to the measures taken by the EU against US steel and aluminium tariffs. Speaking at a daily press briefing in Brussels, Gill commented on President Donald Trump’s statement about imposing tariffs on the EU, mentioning that the EU would respond with additional tariffs if this plan was implemented. Gill emphasized that they are prepared for the US to respond to the EU’s countermeasures, saying, “Yes, we are prepared for everything coming from the US. We have been preparing for this for over a year.” Expressing deep regret over the 25% tariffs imposed by the US on steel and aluminium imports starting yesterday, Gill called on the US to immediately cancel the tariffs. Gill also mentioned that they wish to negotiate with the US to prevent these tariffs and reiterated that they are prepared for the possible consequences of the decision made by the US. The 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports by the US took effect on March 12th. Following the start of additional tariffs on US steel and aluminium imports, the EU announced that countermeasures worth 26 billion euros would be implemented. The EU also published a list of US products that could be subjected to retaliatory customs duties. The 99-page product list includes various items such as meat, poultry, dairy, nuts, coffee, fruits and vegetables, alcoholic beverages, gum, e-cigarettes, American whiskey closely associated with the American lifestyle, clothing, hand tools, machinery, and motorcycles.
