Alarming report in Japan: 298 thousand people could die in a mega earthquake

A report issued by the Japanese government has revealed the devastating impact of a possible mega earthquake. According to the report, a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Nankai Trough could result in the deaths of 298 thousand people. Following the 2011 magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami that led to a nuclear disaster in Japan, a report commissioned by the government to experts has highlighted the potential for another “mega earthquake” to cause even greater destruction. The report, published by the Japan Cabinet Office, warns that a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Nankai Trough along the Pacific Ocean coast could generate tsunami waves ranging from 10 to 30 meters in height. It is mentioned that if the earthquake occurs in winter and during night hours, the death toll could reach 298 thousand, with most deaths attributed to the tsunami. Such a scenario could result in the collapse of over two million buildings, the evacuation of approximately 1.23 million people representing about 1% of the country’s population, and an economic loss of nearly two trillion. Japan, known as one of the most seismically active countries, has an estimated 80% probability of experiencing a magnitude 8 to 9 earthquake in the next 30 years in the Nankai Trough along the Pacific Ocean coast. While concerns arise over the potential devastation of such a “mega earthquake,” experts suggest that preventive measures could help reduce the loss of life and property.
