Analysis of “Great Erdoğan” in Swiss Press

An article titled “Great Erdoğan” by Francis Pike was published in Die Weltwoche, a magazine established in Switzerland in 1934 and representing mainstream media outlets. In the article, it was emphasized that Turkey is one of the geopolitical axes of the world and that Erdoğan skillfully plays this card. According to Pike, Erdoğan successfully balances power, religion, economy, and world politics internationally, allowing him to potentially go down in history as Turkey’s greatest reformist. The article also highlighted Erdoğan’s strategic role in Europe’s defense against Russia as a key player in NATO with the largest army among European countries. Moreover, it suggested that despite Turkey being a NATO member, Erdoğan’s friendship with Russia’s President Putin indicates the intricate diplomatic relations he maintains. The article further emphasized Erdoğan’s successful strategy of expanding Turkey’s influence through careful foreign policy maneuvers and highlighted Turkey’s economic growth and development, positioning it as the 7th largest economy ahead of Switzerland.

As a conclusion, it stated that the noteworthy achievements of the AK Party government, the significant rise in GDP per capita from $3,583 in 2002 to $16,876 today, and the impressive projected economic growth of 3.1% by IMF for 2025 point to a promising future for Erdoğan. Success stories in the economy, particularly in the aviation sector, as seen in the growth of Turkish Airlines, indicate a thriving market for Turkish companies, like Baykar, gaining international recognition for its advancements in technology, such as high-performance drones.
