Another Student in the US Detained by Immigration Authorities

The University of Minnesota President, Rebecca Cunningham, reported that a student was detained at a house off campus.
In the US, it was stated that an unnamed student from the University of Minnesota was detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to The New York Times, University President Rebecca Cunningham announced that the student was detained at a house off campus. Cunningham stated that the university was not aware of the detention incident beforehand, emphasizing that no information was shared with federal authorities before the incident occurred. The president did not disclose the name of the university student or the type of visa they held. Meanwhile, university spokesperson Jake Ricker said that the student was enrolled in the “Carlson School of Management.” ICE officials did not respond to requests for information on the matter.
“CAMPUSES SHOULD BE SAFE FOR ALL STUDENTS” Minnesota Senator, Doron Clark, stated, “Our campuses should be safe places for all students, staff, and visitors. We must stand against the Trump administration’s senseless demonization of our friends, family, and neighbors.” The University of Minnesota has been among the major universities hosting support protests for Palestine in 2024. The Department of Justice had announced in February that the university was among the 10 schools that inspectors would visit to determine if they were protecting Jewish students and faculty from illegal discrimination. The “Twin Cities” campus of the university, one of its 5 campuses, was also included in the list of 60 schools warned by the Department of Education this month about the risk of “potential enforcement actions” due to allegations of anti-Semitism.
