The tech giant Apple is exploring humanoid and non-humanoid robotic form factors. If the research progresses as planned, Apple-branded home robots could be launched in 2028.

The maker of the iPhone emphasized elements pointing towards an ultimate consumer robot in a published article related to robotics research. While this development has stirred excitement in the industry, the work is still in its early stages.

In the initial phase of smart home systems, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that Apple has developed a desktop robot with a screen resembling an iPad, connected to a robotic arm. According to Gurman, the device’s official announcement will be made in 2027, with sales starting in 2028. The unnamed robot is said to be controlled by Siri and Apple Intelligence, capable of responding to voice commands.

Heading towards humanoid robots, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that although the company initially produces non-humanoid robots classified as smart home systems, eventually, they aim to develop humanoid robots with limbs. Kuo suggested that the dream of sci-fi enthusiasts for humanoid robots that fold laundry and iron clothes may not be realized soon, but it could be the ultimate goal. However, Apple needs to be sure that there is a demand from the masses first.

Amid the excitement following recent developments, there are also skeptics. Experts particularly point out the high production cost of a humanoid robot that could be sold to every home. It is emphasized that for profitability to increase and for the product to appeal to a wide audience, costs must first be brought down to an acceptable level.
