Artificial Intelligence Debates: Partner or Competitor?

Artificial intelligence enables companies to automate processes and increase profitability. AI is currently humanity’s most powerful technology and how we approach it will shape the world we live in. Ultimately, we will decide whether AI is our business partner, colleague, or assistant. Experts Mehmet Ali Kılıçkaya, Levent Erden, Ayşegül İldeniz, and Alpagut Çilingir discussed this concept for ntv.com.tr.

Fishing is one of the oldest professions in the world. Fishermen used to rely on intuition to venture to places where they expected fish to be. If all went well, they would catch fish and secure their livelihood. They used to navigate by looking at the sun and stars, while making decisions about the weather based on forecasts. It was a risky job, as calm weather could suddenly turn into a storm. Nowadays, fishing has significantly changed and evolved. Boats are now equipped with navigation devices. Weather apps inform fishermen instantly. Satellite scanning methods can accurately pinpoint the location of fish schools. Now, more fish can be caught with less effort. Fishermen from 50 years ago would be surprised to see their modern counterparts. However, today’s fishermen will be even more surprised when they see their future colleagues. In the near future, fishing boats will be fully automated with robots and artificial intelligence, operating without human intervention. As a result, boats will be able to stay longer at sea and venture into more dangerous waters. Yes, fishing will become smarter as time progresses. Not just fishing, but all industries…

For instance, in China, a port has implemented AI technology to automate crane operations and other processes. This is a great example of AI implementation. In the UK, AI is now being used in tax assessments. It is possible to cite more examples.

Artificial intelligence is transforming every sector, from agriculture to healthcare, from retail to transportation. It learns from data coming from connected devices and reshapes our lives. To succeed in AI, a shift in mindset from current employees is essential. We must not be stuck in the old ways of doing things. Revolutions in history tell us about the endless struggle between resisting change and adapting to it. In the AI revolution, those who cannot adapt will fall behind. Imagine a fisherman from today competing with a fisherman from 3000 years ago. Which one do you think would conduct safer and more efficient operations, sustaining their livelihood for years? The time has come for all of us to rethink how we do business…
