Astronauts Stranded in Space for 9 Months: Return to Earth and Share Experiences

After being stranded in space for 9 months, NASA astronauts spoke out for the first time upon their return to Earth. The astronauts described how they spent their initial days back on Earth. Following 9 months of being stuck in space, the returning astronauts garnered significant attention for the duration of their ordeal. Two astronauts expressed contentment with this interest. NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore recounted their experiences upon returning to Earth. Wilmore stated, “We heard that our friends and family took great care of us and were concerned about our well-being. I am very grateful and bewildered that we could be a positive element bringing people together.” Wilmore mentioned that they focused on their tasks in space, saying, “You don’t concern yourself with politics while in space; you fully concentrate on your mission. I’m not as young as I used to be, but I worked out and exercised more on the Space Station than I did my whole life. Our professional team is working towards making us stronger. We are trying to minimize muscle atrophy and bone loss. So, if we go to other planets, the Moon, or beyond in the foreseeable future, we can adapt there as well.” Sunni Williams, reflecting on her first day on Earth after 9 months, said, “It was a great feeling to lay down on the bed after 9 months. I relaxed by just lying there until the next day. I tried to adapt to gravity. After passing some tests, I returned home. Meeting my dogs was very special for me.” NASA astronauts traveled to space in June aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule. However, due to technical issues with Starliner, the astronauts were not allowed to return in that capsule, which came back empty to the Earth. After spending a week in space, the two astronauts returned to Earth 9 months later aboard a SpaceX capsule.
