Attempt by Apple to Avoid Taxes: 1.5 Million iPhones from India to the US

To avoid the impact of new taxes announced by US President Donald Trump, Apple brought around 1.5 million iPhones from India to the US.

The US-based tech giant Apple increased its production in India to avoid the new taxes announced by US President Donald Trump, sending approximately 1.5 million iPhones to the US.

Following discussions with local authorities to reduce customs procedures from 30 hours to 6 hours at the Chennai Airport in the Tamil Nadu state of India last month, Apple shipped iPhones to the US with six cargo planes, each with a capacity of 100 tons. It was noted that Apple aimed to create stock in the US market with this move. Apple, which produces the majority of its products in China, had warned of significant price increases in iPhones due to the new taxes. Ahead of this, Apple had previously partnered with Foxconn and Tata in India to move its production outside of China, starting production in three factories. Foxconn’s Chennai plant had produced 20 million iPhones last year. Apple sells over 220 million iPhones worldwide annually, and 20% of iPhone imports to the US come from India. It is estimated that with President Trump increasing the tax rate on imports from China from 54% to 125%, the price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is sold for $1,599 in the US, will rise to $2,300. Trump had imposed a 10% basic customs duty on all countries on April 2 and special mutual tax rates for some countries. Yesterday, Trump raised the tax rate on China from 54% to 125%, stating that more than 75 countries had contacted the US to address commercial issues and announced a 90-day suspension of customs duties.
