Bill Gates Reveals His “Coolest” Code Ever Written

Celebrating Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, co-founder Bill Gates has shared the source code of Altair BASIC interpreter, the first product developed by the company in 1975 for the Altair 8800 computer.

Gates described this code as the “coolest” one he has ever written, sharing it on his own website.

The development of Altair BASIC began when Bill Gates and Paul Allen saw an article in Popular Electronics magazine about the Altair 8800 computer.

The two approached MITS, the manufacturer of Altair, to develop a BASIC interpreter for the computer.

Despite not having ready-made code, the software they developed within a few weeks became Microsoft’s first product.

The published source code of Altair BASIC is available on Bill Gates’ website as a 157-page PDF document.

Previously, Microsoft had added an artificial intelligence tool called Copilot Search to the Bing search engine to improve search results.

The company also introduced extension support for the mobile version of the Edge browser for Android and unveiled a productive artificial intelligence model for creating gaming worlds.
