Boat capsizes on Congo River: 50 dead

In the Equateur province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a boat capsized on the Congo River, resulting in at least 50 casualties. Maitre Kolomba Mampunia, President of the Red Cross Equator Region, announced on the national television channel RTNC that at least 50 people lost their lives in a boat capsize on the Congo River near the town of Mayita, which is in the Equateur province.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the region, with concerns about the possibility of an increase in the number of casualties. Due to the lack of sufficient asphalt roads in the country, transportation is mainly reliant on rivers and lakes. Particularly during periods of heavy seasonal rainfall, accidents like these occur due to the poor maintenance of boats and overloading of passengers and cargo beyond their capacities.
