Buyer Found at 8 Thousand Liras per Kilogram: Early Harvest Started in Mersin

The first indoor plum harvest of the season was conducted in Mut district of Mersin. Plums, which found buyers at 8 thousand liras per kilogram, were sent to Istanbul. The harvest event, held in the greenhouse belonging to farmer Mustafa Yılmaz in Göksu neighborhood of the district, was attended by Deputy District Governor Isa Uğur, Mersin Forestry Regional Director Rıfat Ataş, Mersin Forestry and Village Relations Department (ORKÖY) Director Necmi Poscu, and others. Speaking at the event, Deputy District Governor Isa Uğur stated that one of the earliest harvests was accomplished, saying, “We hope that such early projects become more common nationwide.” Greenhouse owner Mustafa Yılmaz mentioned that he has been dealing with a greenhouse on a one-acre land for 3 years, stating, “ORKÖY provided 50% support, 20% of which is grant, for our greenhouse. We covered the remaining amount. It was an open area, we closed it and turned it into a greenhouse. It’s February, we brought out our plums, and did our first harvest. If it was outside, this harvest would have been around April 20th or 30th. We significantly advanced it.” Yılmaz also noted that they export to foreign markets in addition to the domestic market, and due to being the only one producing early in the region, they cannot meet the demand, adding that the government needs to provide more support to increase production. On the other hand, the first plums of the season found buyers at 8 thousand liras per kilogram. A total of 24 kilograms of plums, with 9 pieces in each package, were sent to Istanbul.
