Call for Farmers’ Premium Payment

The President of the Turkish Chamber of Agriculture Unions, Şemsi Bayraktar, stated that farmers’ premium support payments should be made on time and in full. Şemsi Bayraktar, the President of the Turkish Chamber of Agriculture Unions (TZOB), made evaluations regarding farmers’ premium support payments. Bayraktar pointed out that premium support payments for the previous year have been made in some provinces, while in others they have not yet been realized, emphasizing the importance of completing support payments as soon as possible. Bayraktar also stated that the yet-to-begin fertilizer and diesel fuel support should be paid promptly, saying, “Turkey can have a strong future in agriculture only by supporting our producers. As long as our farmers are supported, they will continue production, thus ensuring our tables remain abundant.” Stressing that agriculture is a strategic sector, Bayraktar underlined the vital importance of the support provided to the sector. Bayraktar noted that despite climate change, natural disasters, rising input costs, and market fluctuations, farmers continue to produce, stating, “The struggle of our producers is only sustainable with sufficient support mechanisms. Support given to the agricultural sector not only ensures the welfare of our producers, but also guarantees healthy and affordable food access for our consumers.” The fragmented and different dates of payments throughout the year in the current support system negatively affect the economic power of our farmers. Support items such as fertilizers, diesel fuel, and premiums, as well as certified seeds, seedlings, and saplings, are paid at different times. Due to the incomplete payment of support at times when our farmers need it the most amidst rising input costs, they experience economic difficulties. For the sustainability of agricultural production and to keep the food supply chain intact, support must be paid in a timely and lump sum manner.
