Canada Launches Advertising Campaign in 12 U.S. States

Canadian Foreign Minister Joly announced, “We are launching an advertising campaign in 12 different U.S. states in response to the customs crisis.” During an interview with CNN, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly commented on the customs tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canada. Joly stated that they had implemented customs tariffs worth $60 billion in retaliation against American goods, and added, “We are launching an advertising campaign in 12 different U.S. states. Canadians are sending the message that there are no winners in a trade war.” As part of this campaign, billboards featuring these ads will be displayed on highways in states such as Florida, Nevada, Georgia, and New Hampshire. The tension over customs tariffs between the U.S. and Canada began on March 4th when the U.S. imposed an additional 25% customs tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico. Trump later announced that they would not apply customs tariffs until April 2nd for products covered under the “United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).” On March 12th, U.S. President Donald Trump informed that the additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports would come into effect. On March 10th, Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford mentioned that they would impose an additional 25% fee on the electricity provided to U.S. states in response to the U.S. administration’s customs tariffs. Ford emphasized that they would not hesitate to increase this rate if necessary, stating, “If the U.S. escalates this, I will not hesitate to cut off electricity completely. I feel sorry for the American people because they are not the ones who started this trade war. There is only one person responsible, President Trump.” The White House cautioned Canada on March 12th that Ontario’s plans to completely cut off electricity supply to the U.S. could have “serious consequences.”
