Canadians Canceling US Holidays!

Due to the customs tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Ottawa administration, Canadians are canceling their travel plans to the US. According to a report by The Canadian Press (CP), Canadians have been altering their holiday plans and rethinking their travels due to the economic impacts of the new customs tariffs in the US. The tariffs announced during the Trump era has led to widespread patriotism in Canada. Some Canadians have started focusing on more affordable options in Europe and the Caribbean. Data shared by the leading travel agency Flight Centre Travel Group Canada revealed a 40% decrease in reservations made for the US in February compared to the same month in 2024. Additionally, at least 1 out of 5 Canadian travelers have canceled their plans to the US in the last 3 months. President of the Toronto-based insurance company Travel Secure Inc., Martin Firestone, mentioned that anti-Trump sentiments have played a significant role in people saying, “I’m not going to the US, I’m not going to travel there after what they’ve done to us.” CUSTOMS TARIFFS ON CANADA AND MEXICO US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on February 1st imposing an additional 25% customs duty on goods imported from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on imports from China. While a lower tariff of 10% was applied to energy resources imported from Canada, these tariffs were set to be effective on February 4th. On February 3rd, Trump had stopped the implementation of tariffs for a month in response to measures to enhance border security by Canada and Mexico. After the expiration of the mentioned period, the 25% customs duties on imports from Canada and Mexico that were temporarily suspended came into effect yesterday. Consequently, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that the US had initiated a trade war against Canada and announced that Canada would respond by adding an equal additional customs duty to the $155 billion worth of imports from the US.
