Celebration Turned Tragic in Iran: “Wednesday Fire” Event Claims 19 Lives

In the “Wednesday Fire” celebrations in the capital city of Tehran, 19 people lost their lives. The number of injured was reported as 5,568.
The “Wednesday Fire” celebrations, which started after iftar in Tehran yesterday, saw some citizens jumping over fires while others used fireworks, firecrackers, and at times homemade explosives.
In Iran, during the preparations leading to the last Wednesday of the year according to the Hicri Shamsi calendar, called the “Wednesday Fire” celebrations, 19 people lost their lives, bringing the injured count to 5,568. Despite the announcement by the police that those using explosive materials during the celebrations would be detected with drones, it was not prevented. It was noted that six of the deaths occurred in the days leading up to the celebrations while preparing explosive materials. The statement mentioned that 338 of the injured suffered limb loss, while 1557 were injured in their eyes. It was reported that the majority of injuries occurred in Tehran, East Azerbaijan, and West Azerbaijan. In Iran, where the Hicri Shamsi calendar is used, especially children and young people jump over fires and ignite fireworks, homemade explosives, and firecrackers on the last Wednesday night of the year before Nevruz. Accidents that occur while preparing explosive materials during these celebrations and before them lead to the deaths of dozens of people and injuries to hundreds every year in the country.
