Asserting that Turkey is an “ongoing threat,” Houpis stated that the Greek forces are ready to take action within minutes. “CITIZENS SHOULD FEEL SAFE” According to the Greek City Times news site, the Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff Houpis, pointed out to the “persistent testing” Turkey poses to Greece, claiming that the Greek Armed Forces are ready to respond to any threat within five minutes. Houpis, suggesting that Turkey employs “revisionist tactics,” noted that Greece is focused on resolving only territorial waters and exclusive economic zone issues. “Greek citizens should feel safe despite Turkey’s provocative rhetoric,” said the Chief of the General Staff, stating that Greece tolerates such statements and that they will not engage in such rhetoric. “STRENGTH VITAL AGAINST HYBRID THREATS” Speaking to journalist Kostas Sarikas on Alpha TV, Houpis emphasized Greece’s determination to “act resolutely when necessary.” Describing the Mediterranean as a geopolitical center and a fundamental area of the country’s interests, Houpis stressed that strength is vital for deterrence against hybrid threats. The Chief of the General Staff also evaluated recent operational developments, mentioning that the voids left behind by the financial crisis are being addressed and lessons learned from recent conflicts are being integrated into a new 12-year weapons program. Houpis explained that this includes advanced technologies like unmanned aerial vehicles as well as efforts to counter adversaries’ technological advancements. Houpis also called on young people to pursue careers in the military, stating that it is a combination of “service, science, and secure livelihood in the defense of the nation.”
