China launches new satellites

China has sent the fifth group of satellites that will make up the Chienfan team satellite network, part of China’s project competing with Starlink by American company SpaceX, into space. According to a statement from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the group of 18 satellites was launched from the commercial space vehicle center on Hainan Island with the “Long March-8 Y6” rocket. The successful placement of the satellites in their planned orbit marked the 563rd successful transport mission carried out by Long March rockets. Developed by Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology Company (SSST), the Chienfan satellites will be part of the team satellite network established in Low Earth Orbit. In the initial stage of the project known as “G60 Starlink,” 1296 satellites are planned to be positioned in orbit, with a goal of creating a mega team satellite network consisting of 14,000 broadband internet satellites when all stages are completed. The first group of 18 satellites that will make up the Chienfan satellite network was launched on August 6, 2024, followed by the second group on October 15, 2024, the third on December 5, 2024, and the fourth on January 23, 2025. Satellite networks like Starlink and Chienfan have sparked debates over the potential congestion they may create in Low Earth Orbit and the space debris they could generate after the satellites reach the end of their operational life.
