China Plans to Establish a Giant Radio Telescope Array on the Moon

China is planning to establish a massive radio telescope array on the far side of the Moon, invisible from Earth. This project aims to explore the early stages of the universe by detecting ultra-long wavelength cosmic signals, especially focusing on the period known as the “cosmic dark ages.”

TELESCOPE ARRAY AND TECHNICAL STRUCTURE The radio telescope array planned to be built on the far side of the Moon by China will have highly advanced technology to detect ultra-long wavelength radio signals. This array will consist of approximately 7,200 antennas, all of which will work in synchronized harmony to gather cosmic signals from a wide area. This region of the Moon, isolated from radio frequency pollution from Earth, will allow for clearer detection of signals. Additionally, the low gravity on the Moon’s surface will provide advantages during the placement and construction of the antennas. The design of the antennas will be optimized to collect data with high precision and durability. The materials used to manufacture these antennas will be able to withstand the harsh conditions on the Moon – extreme temperature changes, radiation, and dust storms. Robotic vehicles will be used during the installation of the array, ensuring precise placement of the antennas in designated areas. The data collected from the antennas will be processed through a center established on the Moon’s surface and transmitted to Earth. This will enhance the data collection process on the far side of the Moon, allowing scientists to conduct real-time analyses. Furthermore, the ability of the telescope array to operate in different frequency ranges will provide data on a wide spectrum. SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS The project aims to offer innovative solutions not only in the field of astronomy but also in engineering and robotics. Implementing such a complex structure on the surface of the Moon could advance humanity’s space engineering capabilities. In the long term, this project may serve as a foundation for establishing more comprehensive scientific infrastructures on the Moon. PROJECT OBJECTIVE The main objective of the project is to gain more insights into the early stages of the universe and specifically investigate the period known as the “cosmic dark ages.” This era encompasses the time from the formation of the first stars after the Big Bang and the radio waves emitted during this process may provide unique data on the universe’s formation. Traditional radio telescopes struggle to capture signals at ultra-long wavelengths obstructed by the Earth’s atmosphere. However, the radio telescope array on the far side of the Moon will function in an environment free from such obstacles. The Moon’s natural barrier against radio frequency pollution makes it an ideal location for such observations. Thanks to this project, scientists will be able to conduct more detailed analyses on subjects like the first lights of the universe and the distribution of matter. This observation can shed light on fundamental questions regarding the formation of galaxies and the structure of the early universe. Furthermore, these researches may offer more clues about the dynamics of dark matter and dark energy. The lunar exploration program could not only accelerate scientific progress but also provide opportunities for international collaboration. This project could set a new standard for utilizing space infrastructure more effectively.
