As the trade war escalates between Washington and Beijing with the announcement of new tariffs by Trump, China retaliates by pledging to import fewer Hollywood films.

In response to the United States imposing a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, China has issued a new statement.

On Thursday, April 10th, China announced that in retaliation to President Donald Trump’s increase in tariffs on China, they will immediately restrict the import of Hollywood films. Industry analysts believe that this move will have a minor financial impact as the box office revenue for Hollywood films in China has significantly declined in recent years. “DOMESTIC DEMAND WILL DROP FURTHER” China has been importing 10 films from Hollywood every year for the past 30 years, considering it the heart of the US film industry. The National Film Administration of Beijing noted that Trump’s tariff actions will further decrease domestic demand for American cinema. In a statement on the agency’s website, it was mentioned that “We will adhere to all market rules, respect the choices of viewers, and decrease the number of imported American films to some extent.” TRUMP: HEARD WORSE THINGS Trump’s move to increase tariffs received no defense from Hollywood studios as they had been focusing on the Chinese market, the world’s second-largest film market, to boost their box office revenues. However, Chinese domestic films have been performing better than Hollywood films in recent years. Hollywood films only represent 5% of total box office revenue in China. In response to a question about China’s restrictions, US President Donald Trump expressed his lack of support for Hollywood and stated, “I’ve heard worse things, in my opinion.”
