Civil Servants in Metropolitans Seek Transfer: 74% of Salary Spent on Rent and Food

55% of civil servants do not want to continue working in big cities. The main reason is the rising costs, especially the housing issue. This is according to Şevval Yiğit’s report. Living in metropolitans has become more expensive, and the housing problem has worsened. One out of every two civil servants said they wanted a transfer. These findings are from a survey conducted by the Turkish Büro-Sen with 2,000 civil servants working in big cities and coastal towns. Evaluating the survey results, Turkish Büro-Sen President Türkeş Güney stated, “55.30% of our civil servants expressed a desire to transfer to Anatolia if given the opportunity. 56.80% of those wanting a transfer cited economic reasons. Some civil servants arrange contractual marriages to be eligible for a transfer. They even obtain reports related to their family members. In short, they resort to underhanded methods, unfortunately reported to our union.” According to the survey, Güney stated that 74.2% of civil servants’ incomes go towards food and rent. “We asked civil servants about their biggest expenditure categories concerning their salaries. They reported that food expenses at 37.1% ranked first, followed by rent at 37.1%. When we add a 5.9% credit debt to this ratio, it is understood that our civil servants barely have any income left for holidays, outings, and social life.” Güney, who demands salary improvements for civil servants working in metropolitan and coastal towns, also added, “Our civil servants working in these areas cannot make ends meet due to the living conditions. Urgent metropolis compensation and rent assistance must be provided. Furthermore, the state should construct affordable long-term housing through TOKI to address the housing issue for civil servants.”
