Commercial vehicle alcohol lock condition: Minister Kacır shared the details

A requirement for alcohol locks on all commercial vehicles is being introduced. The regulation determining the rules for the use of advanced safety systems in vehicles was published in the Official Gazette yesterday. Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır shared the details of the regulation, which is based on international practices in transportation safety.

The regulation pertains to commercial vehicles such as taxis, vans, panel vans, and minibusses. It includes establishing a standard interface that enables the installation of post-sales alcohol locking devices on these vehicles.

An alcohol lock determines the driver’s alcohol level through breath control. If the limit is exceeded, the vehicle locks itself.

The regulation also makes the smart speed support system and driver distraction and attention warning system mandatory. The requirement for an event data recorder that includes information about the critical systems of the vehicle just before and after an accident will come into effect for commercial vehicles, while this obligation will start in 2029 for medium and heavy commercial vehicles.

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır stated that they continue to implement regulations based on international practices in transportation safety to protect the competitiveness of our automotive sector and ensure the safety of our citizens at the highest level in line with EU compliance.
