Conflict in India: 1 fatality, 43 injured

In Manipur, a state in India known for its violent incidents, clashes erupted between protesters from the Kuki community and security forces. One person lost their life, and 43 others were injured. According to India’s NDTV channel, the Kuki community protested against the government’s decision regarding “free movement of vehicles” in the state. In a statement on X social media platform, the state police reported that protesters blocked buses escorted by security forces that were traveling from the state capital, Imphal. The statement mentioned that a conflict broke out between members of the Kuki community, including armed individuals, and security forces. It was noted that security forces intervened with tear gas and batons against the protesters who fired shots, resulting in 27 security personnel being injured in the clash. The statement also mentioned one fatality and 16 injuries among the Kuki community. Furthermore, a leader of the Kuki community stated that they would strongly oppose the government’s “free movement attempt” by urging community members to block roads in their areas. The violent incidents in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, when members of the Kuki community and other ethnic groups opposed the protests launched by the Meitei community, constituting 53% of the population, who were not included in the “Scheduled Tribe” category. In the state where the order to “Shoot” was given to the army, more than 250 people have died in violent incidents, and over 60,000 people have been displaced.
